Welcome to Mulberry Fork Review's submissions page. Hopefully this means that you are only moments away from submitting an exceptional piece of prose. We are happy that you trust us enough to send your 'little darlings' out to play. This is, without a doubt, our favorite part of publishing a literary magazine and hosting literary competitions: Reading your work!

Just a word about reading fees before you read all the other blahdy blah. If reading fees aren’t your thing, we understand. However, there is an added benefit here at MFR...

There is a $8.00 reading fee for each submission. This gets you 1) a personal response whether your submission is accepted or not. 2) If your submission is accepted for publication, it will automatically be entered for the best of MFR which is a new venture for us. There are four Categories: Fiction, Flash Fiction, Nonfiction, and Prose Poetry. December 2019, a winner in each category will be selected and receive a prize of $500.

If if you want to take advantage of Priority Submissions which will get you a quick response, try our $20 Tip Jar //mulberryforkreview.submittable.com/submit/26294/tip-jar-priority-submissions

Length?

All categories - 3,500 word max

So, what are we looking for? It's simple. We are looking for quality prose - both fiction and nonfiction. Any color. Any flavor. Any genre. Any style. There is no theme. Whether your prose emerges in the form of a short story, flash fiction, essay, lyrical essay, creative nonfiction or prose poetry, we are interested.

We want to publish stories with a distinctive voice, well-developed characters, and a strong sense of place. Send us work that is worth revisiting. We love stories and essays that stand up to scrutiny and reveal something new with each read. Send us prose poems that challenge the imagination with use of language; something that will capture the attention of our readers. Overuse of adverbs? Not so much.

Just a few words about general formatting and presentation which apply to all our submission categories: keep it simple. Standard font size, font color (black), and margins will do just fine. We understand if you feel that 30pt-Hot-Pink-Rage captures the essence of your story but it's awfully difficult to read. Double space, probably a good idea. All submissions must be in English, please. While we have no desire to be overly prescriptive OR proscriptive, don't send us hate-driven, racist, misogynistic submissions.

Simultaneous submissions are fine. Please let us know as soon as possible if your work has been accepted elsewhere.

We prefer previously unpublished material. If you are submitting previously published work, please let us know in your cover letter and make sure you hold the copyright.

Response time is 4 - 6 weeks.

AUTHOR'S RIGHTS: If we accept your work for publication, we request First Electronic Rights; all rights revert back to the author after publication. We request the non-exclusive right to indefinitely archive the electronic issue. Following publication at Mulberry Fork Review, the Author may publish the work elsewhere but the Publisher asks that first publication credit be given to Mulberry Fork Review by any subsequent publishers. Visit Author's Rights for more details.

We are not word count fanatics but it's probably best to keep the max word count to something in the neighborhood of 3,500. If you have got a brilliant short story that exceeds that limit, send it anyway. Most short stories will average 1500 - 3000 words. If you have a substantially shorter submission you might consider our Flash Fiction or Prose Poetry categories.

Use standard formatting, please. Keep it simple. Something like: 12pt, commonly used, black font with standard margins, double spaced.

We prefer not to burden categories with a strict word count. By its very nature, the flash fiction is a form which provokes much debate over length. MOST submissions will probably come in around the 250 - 500 word mark. Shall we say, anything under 1,000 words which YOU consider a 'flash fiction'? (There's always the short story category or the even more controversial prose poetry category.)

Prose poetry is another style which is often debated. What is prose poetry? For our purposes here let's briefly define it as poetry written in prose form which pays particular attention to the use of language and metaphor while maintaining a narrative.

As for the word count...  let's just leave this open. We've never received a prose poem that was 3,500 words so it should be fine... right? Just send us your poem, it's fine.

The word count for nonfiction is the same as short story. We think a 3,500 word max is probably a good idea but should you have outstanding work that surpasses this max, send it anyway.

We are looking for essays, lyrical essays, and creative nonfiction.

You'll notice that we have a Tip Jar. We operate Mulberry Fork Review on a shoe-string budget with no outside funding from grants or bursaries. It costs more than you might think to operate a literary magazine. We would greatly appreciate it if you would consider helping us keep the journal afloat.

There is a standing reading fee of $8.00 which applies to all submissions and which, if your submission is accepted, automatically enters your work into the Best of MFR competition. The winners will be announced in December, 2019 and will be awarded $500 in each of the four categories, Fiction, Flash Fiction, Nonfiction, and Prose Poetry. If you wish to pay an additional fee we will prioritize your submission. This isn't a guarantee that your work will be accepted but it does mean that we will respond as quickly as possible (trying our very BEST to respond within a week). AND... if your work isn't accepted we will offer an explanation as to why.

The Tip Jar fee is $20.
